Or not so subtle, I would say. Set in the exquisite Menlyn Boutique Hotel this award-winning restaurant is sure to provide a world-class experience. Truly unique the menu is inspired by international cuisine with a local twist. The carefully selected wine list offers exciting options for every palate and occasion.
On this cool winter evening, we are warmly welcomed by the friendly staff who usher us to our stylishly decorated table. As we get comfortable in front of the fireplace we are presented with vibrant welcome drinks.

Our host shows me to the well-stocked wine cellar where he recommends the L’Avenir Single Block Pinotage 2019. It is a bold dry wine with notes of oak and dark berries and hints of spice. Pinotage is a grape variety that was created in South Africa as far back as 1925 and is a cross between Hermitage and Pinot noir.

As an appetizer we share the pork belly served with an apple and fennel slaw, hazelnut brittle, crackling, radishes and sriracha mayo.
The scene is idyllic. Music in the background with a soft din from the other patrons. Gentle lighting and the flickering of flames. Delicious food, fine wine and delightful company.

For mains, Amanda has the rainbow trout with harissa-grilled octopus, grilled lime, charred broccoli stems, potato salad and mojo sauce. I have the Griller Beef, which is served with red wine-poached onions, oxtail, chimichurri potatoes, port and vanilla sauce. We convey our compliments to the kitchen.

As the evening passes by our conversation drifts from recent reads to travel destinations. We discuss family and the value of spending time together.
Breaking with tradition I have an espresso for dessert. It has a more intense flavour, and it has become my regular.
Thank you So Subtle for a wonderful evening, au revoir et à bientôt.
