Pasta Barra is the brand new Italian brother on the Pretoria culinary block. We got invited to experience the service and dishes that is fast-tracking them to the top of the restaurant food chain, and let me tell you – we were not disappointed. OK fine, we were completely blown away and we can get lyrical about how the experience transported us back to the sun-kissed shores of southern Italy…

Our first impression of the contemporary house-converted-into-restaurant on a busy corner in Brooklyn, is the parking and a deligthful fellow showing us to a spot inside the fenced-off area. He seems to be very dedicated to his position as parking manager. And this seems to be the kind of enthusiasm that is shared by all of the staff here. A team of ambassadors promoting a brand. But nothing as stiff and uptight as that sounds. There is simply a sense of kind professionalism.
We are warmly shown to our table and order the Prawn with Black Risotto and Calamari Fusion for starters, preceded by a bread board and artisanal butters, balsamic vinegar and olive oil to whet our appetites.

The decor at Pasta Barra is a blend of modern sophistication and rustic charm, with wooden accents and soft lighting – upmarket yet cosy. But the main feature is the bar and open kitchen which adds a touch of drama. We were absolutely intrigued watching the smoking and sizzling going on right there in front of us and the most artistically crafted dishes being put out for delivery to the different tables. Our mains are served: Beef Ragu Pasta for Don and Kingklip with sweet potato, asparagus and smoked paprika sauce for me. It really does taste as good as it looks and the service ambassador helps Don decide on the perfect wine pairing. We chat about the view of the Union Buildings and the history of Pretoria – the place where I grew up, in a house not far from here – and how life can produce unexpected surprises, blessings in disguise and how important it is to take time to celebrate all the small milestones.

As the night progresses we keep watching the wonderful dishes being lined up on the bar counter by the head chef and his team – from traditional favourites like Carbonara and Beef Mafioso to innovative creations like Porcini Risotto and homemade ricotta ravioli – each dish a work of art. The owner-brothers come to check on us during intervals to make sure that we are satisfied and comfortable. We assure him that we couldn’t ask for more – and just as we think that this experience couldn’t get any better, the tiramisu (to share) arrives. It is as impeccable as the service and the perfect caffeine companion and ending to our evening.

Pasta Barra is more than just a restaurant. With it’s exquisite, elegant ambience, impeccable service and food, it is set to become one of Pretoria’s premier dining destinations. We felt like family as soon as we walked in. We will be back with our family very soon!
