If you are looking for a retro-style scene for brunch, look no further than Caffe Corretto. Sister restaurant to Capito, it is also located at The Club Hazelwood. The theme is American Italian, and you can almost hear “Robert De Niro’s Waiting” playing on the radio. Our host Frans knows us too well and welcomes us with mimosas and americanos.

As we sit down Pellie Grobler, the Head Chef, comes over to greet us. We exchange pleasantries and he explains to us how they decided on the décor and menu. We browse through the menu and Amanda decides on one of the Signature Breakfasts – Eggs Napolitano, which is poached eggs in Napolitano sauce with bacon and basil. I am a little less adventurous and order the Eggs Benedict with bacon.

While enjoying our meals we get to discussing how food is such an integral part of Italian culture; families come together around the table, business deals are made, pacts are formed, and the world’s problems are solved all while enjoying your mamma’s good cooking. It is very similar to our culture; one has to wonder how it all went wrong. How did our portion sizes get so large and why are we not gathering around the table anymore? How have we become conditioned into “eating up” and not engaging our senses with small, nutritious portions, and how has “satisfied” become “full”? We vow again never to force our kids to eat all the food on their plates. Only ‘til satisfied.
As we ponder these questions, we enjoy some more of the wonderful coffee that barista Chris conjures up for us. We admire the photos on the walls and have one last Aperol Spritz.

What a wonderful experience, delicious food, and drinks in a vintage 1970’s New York setting. It has set the mood for a lazy Sunday afternoon. Ciao, alla prossima.
