A few years ago Mexican restaurants were not common in South Africa. There were no franchise stores. Only the odd Cantina somewhere in a neighbourhood in Johannesburg or Capetown. Then someone saw the opportunity. They took a trip to Mexico, brought back authentic cuisine, and created a casual dining experience. It became an instant hit and Salsa Mexican grills started opening everywhere. In the beginning, they were packed and you could hear folks belting out “Are you with me” after a few tequilas. Now they seem to have quietened down a little, but not lost their appeal. There are currently 10 around the country.
The bright colours, flamboyant décor, and margaritas do go down better in summer than in winter. Weekends are also easier to nurse Cerveza hangovers than midweek days. And if you are not into the customary beverages, you can still order red wine.
The food menu specialises in traditional dishes. The variety is quite large but they also have the option for you to create your own feast. We did that, we had the skinny lettuce shells with spicy guacamole. Mine filled with a battered hake, pickled jalapenos, and chipotle crema. Amanda filled hers with chicken, pickled cabbage slaw, and black beans. The ingredients are fresh and the spreads are tasty, especially if you like it spicy.
Although this experience was date night, we do often go to Salsa with the family. Everyone has a great time, but what I sometimes miss is a kid’s play area for the smaller folk. That said we do manage just fine.
That create-your-own feast filled me up so this time there is no dessert. The missus orders an americano. With summer fast approaching and temperatures rising we decided to sit outside while she finishes her coffee.
Gracias Salsa y buenas noches.
