The old house up on the hill looks spooky at night. It is a wonderful old house with high ceilings and wooden floors. To an extent, it has been modernized but retains its old charm. There is a graveyard under the old Jacaranda trees. A bird shrieks from the top branches, not sure what kind it is. Inside the dim lighting is warm and inviting. It gives respite from the winter chill outside. We are shown to our reserved table, although I do not think the reservation was necessary. Midweek nights are not usually that busy.
There is a cellar and I enjoy perusing and selecting a wine. I decide on the Bon Courage Estate Cape Vintage 2017. The waiter takes the bottle and presents it to the table with two glasses. He asks me if I would like to taste the wine before he pours it. Of course, I want to make a show of tasting the wine. I taste it and it is very sweet, I realize my mistake. I allow him to pour the two glasses. I must confess. I chose the dessert wine. How do I swallow a bit of pride and rectify this? I go back to the cellar and choose the Compagniesdrift Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot 2018. I briefly explain the predicament and say we will keep the dessert wine for later. I seem to have salvaged the situation.
The menu has changed but I do see a favorite, the 300g Chimichurri ribeye. Medium to rare, my mind is made up. The missus selects Halloumi salad with added avo. We chatter away while we sip wine and enjoy our food. At some point the bottle is finished and the plates are empty. It was amazing, as was expected. We call for one coffee and the bill. I still have some sweet wine.
